Guardian Australia has appointed award-winning journalist Stan Grant to its newly created role of indigenous affairs editor, effective immediately.

The appointment is a further commitment to Guardian Australia’s coverage of critical and often untold news, current affairs and issues for Australian and global audiences. Last year, Guardian Australia writer and columnist Paul Daley won a Walkley for his reporting on indigenous affairs. Last week Grant won the same award for his columns for the Guardian.

"I'm so pleased that Stan Grant is joining us at Guardian Australia as our indigenous affairs editor. After many years focusing on foreign affairs Stan has decided to turn his attention to reporting on his own people, in his own country. We're delighted to be working with him at such an exciting turning point in his career,” said Guardian Australia editor Emily Wilson.

"For many people indigenous Australia remains a foreign place. I see my role as a foreign correspondent in my own country. It is an enormous privilege to bring the stories of my people to readers everywhere. This is a crucial time in our history and a time when Australians are telling me they want to listen," Grant said.

Grant has worked at Sky News as its international editor and anchored various programs since 2013. Prior to working at Sky News, Grant spent 11 years working for CNN based in Hong Kong, Beijing and the Middle East. His vast journalism experience has seen him cover major global news events including wars in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan and the hand-over of Hong Kong. Grant has also worked at Macquarie Radio Network, ABC TV, SBS and Seven.

Grant also presents a current affairs program for National Indigenous Television.

This new appointment follows a string of new hires by Guardian Australia in recent months, including Steph Harmon as Guardian Australia’s Culture editor.
