CarExpert New Zealand has announced its first editorial appointments ahead of its local launch next month, making the initial step in building a dedicated New Zealand team to deliver independent new-car coverage for Kiwi drivers.

Locals Matthew Hansen and Dave Kavermann will join CarExpert New Zealand’s on-the-ground editorial operation, bringing extensive motoring and media experience to the joint venture between Trade Me and CarExpert.

Both will focus on producing locally relevant new-car reviews, comparisons and buying advice tailored to the New Zealand market.

Building a local editorial foundation

CarExpert New Zealand aims to help buyers navigate the complexity of the new-car market with clear, practical guidance across every stage of the purchase journey.

Content will include independent reviews, video and market insights distributed via CarExpert.co.nz.

“These appointments set the tone for the kind of leading automotive journalism that CarExpert New Zealand will stand for,” said CarExpert CEO Damon Rielly.

“Local knowledge, editorial independence, and a genuine commitment to helping people buy the right car, without the run-around.”

Matthew Hansen has been appointed editor of CarExpert New Zealand and will lead its editorial direction across written, video and digital platforms.

Hansen co-founded motorsport outlet Velocity News and has contributed as a specialist journalist to NZ Autocar Magazine and Driven at The New Zealand Herald. Most recently, he served as editor of motoring at Stuff.

Dave Kavermann joins as a motoring journalist, returning to automotive media after working across radio, charity PR and communications.

He began his career in new-car sales before co-founding a New Zealand Motorsport Annual with his father.

Kavermann later became an accredited Motorsport New Zealand and V8 Supercars photographer, leading to a role as a motoring journalist at The New Zealand Herald.

What Kiwi drivers can expect

As the local team takes shape, CarExpert New Zealand will provide independent new-car reviews and comparisons, practical buying guidance from experienced local editors, video-led content across YouTube and social platforms, and trusted motoring coverage distributed.

Further announcements are expected in the coming weeks as the launch approaches.
