ARIA Chart: As Christmas tunes flee charts, Dance Monkey returns to #1

The collection of Christmas tunes that flooded the chart in December and subsequently took it over last week, have departed faster than they arrived.

Taking advantage of the yuletide exodus is Tones and I as Dance Monkey slipped back to top spot for a 22nd week out of 33 weeks on the chart.

Gone this week are the likes of Mariah Carey (who enjoyed a second successive year at #1 with All I Want For Christmas Is You). Also checking out from last week’s top 10 were Wham! (which posted its highest ARIA chart position for Last Christmas at #3) and Michael Bublé who disappeared along with his five songs in the top 50.

The rest of last week’s Christmas feast featured music across the spectrum from Andy Williams to The Pogues to Justin Bieber.

The only chart debut inside the top 50 this week was at #34 with Benee’s Glitter. This is the first time on the chart for the New Zealand performer after this, her second single, peaked at #7 in her home market.

Albums

Most of the Christmas albums have exited the album chart this week too.

Exceptions include Robbie Williams’ The Christmas Present (#3 to #38) and Last Christmas Soundtrack (#22 to #40).

Michael Bublé dropped from top spot where his album Christmas spent a sixth year at #1 in the years since its original release in 2011.

Returning to #1 this week was Harry Styles with Fine Line, an album that has been #1 for two of its three weeks in release.

Just two albums entered the top 50 on debut:

#5 Jackboys & Travis Scott with Jackboys. A compilation from Cactus Jack Records.

#25: Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker soundtrack. The ninth film to be scored by composer John Williams. It falls just short of the peak for Star Wars: The Force Awakens (#24, Dec 2015) and better than Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which failed to chart in the Top 50. The highest charting Star Wars soundtrack in the ARIA Charts era is Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (#8, May 1999).
