Triple M host Marty Sheargold has announced that he's taking an extended break from his position, stating that he's "exhausted mentally".

Sheargold was absent from The Marty Sheargold Show last week, with anchor Troy Ellis filling in for him. On Friday Ellis told listeners that he was filling in for Sheargold as he was on "personal leave".

Now, Sheargold has acknowledged his absence in a statement issued by Triple M.

Sheargold said: “I just wanted to let people know that I’ll be taking an extended break from work, with the very kind and compassionate permission of my employers, who have been generous in their understanding of my need for a break."

“I think it’s important for people like myself who have a public voice to admit that I am exhausted mentally from my range of commitments across TV, radio and live shows, in an attempt to continue to remove some of the roadblocks and stigma around mental health.

“I need to set aside some time to get my work/life balance back into something that feels better than it has over the last couple of years. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, your support has been welcome and enriching.”

On Saturday, October 14th, Triple M’s parent company Southern Cross Austereo released a statement on Saturday, saying Sheargold was prioritising his family.

“Marty is taking personal leave to spend some more time with family. He will be back on air again soon,” the statement read.

The same weekend, his producer Loren Barry assured the audience at the Australian Commercial Radio & Audio (ACRA) Awards that Sheargold would be back.

“He is just taking some time, he is just spending some time with his family, but we are all good,” Barry said.

“Everything is fine. We will be back.

“Working in breakfast radio you just get really tired. It is a very tiring job.”
