Ben and Liam reveal themselves as the Adelaide googly eyes bandits

In amongst the chaos that is the beginning of 2022, the city of Adelaide has been dealing with a mystery fit for Sherlock Holmes – who on earth is covering the place in giant googly eyes? Dan Murphy’s, KFC buckets, Jim’s vans, nothing has been safe from The Googly Eye Bandit (or bandits).

Finally stepping forward and solving the mystery have been Nova 919’s Ben and Liam. In an Instagram post, the pair revealed that they have been behind the most talked-about Adelaide incident since that stolen Big Bird costume.

It hasn’t been all laughs though, with accusations that the pair may have damaged an Adelaide icon. 

One of the targets of the prank was the giant Scottsman statue belonging to Scotty’s Motel at Medindie. The statue itself is quite old, and in an interview with The Advertiser, Greg Hobson, manager of Scotty’s Motel says that the statue’s sporran had been damaged.

“His sporran was quite freely moving in the wind and there’s damage to one of the side panels of the statue (on Thursday) as well,” Hobson said.

“I thought it was quite sweet actually until I saw the damage and it’s quite problematic.

“He’s got some age to him and getting him replaced is quite difficult.”

For their part, Ben and Liam have denied damaging the statue. Nova says that the pair were “nowhere near the sporran”, and admitted to photoshopping the googly eyes.

On air on Monday, the pair joked on air that “if we gouged out a chunk of an Adelaide icon, would we give it 24 hours to mull it over and they say hey! Guys! It was us!”.
