Box Office: The Dry goes to #1 as Wonder Woman closes in on $20m

Wonder Woman 1984 was only movie able to keep the #1 spot for its first two weeks of release after being overtaken by The Dry in its third week of release, but this hasn't stopped the film from roaring past Tenet to be the #1 release in Australia since cinemas reopened. Wonder Woman 1984 is also the second highest-earning film released in 2020 with $19m, behind only 1917 which made $23.10m.

Aussie film The Dry has had a strong start to the year with its total now sitting at $6.92m after two weeks of release making it the first Australian film to top the box office in 2021.

The only new entry to the top five this week was Promising Young Woman which comes in at #5 after taking the place of The War with Grandpa which has made $7.51m over the last six weeks. 

Overall, the Australian box office has suffered a 30% drop following the big Boxing Day and New Year weekend totals, making $12.65m this weekend.

#1 The Dry $2,040,095

The mystery film starring Eric Bana has shot to #1 in its second week of release after making an average of $5,062 on 403 screens which was the highest average of the weekend.

#2 Wonder Woman 1984 $1,971,429

The Australian box office closed 2020 with a bang, with the release of Wonder Woman 1984 and the film has rolled its success into 2021 as it continues to reap in money. Over the weekend the DC flick was the most screened film of the country being shown on 500 screens making an average of $3,943.

#3 The Croods: A New Age $1,933,372

After three weeks The Croods sequel has continued to build a strong total which now sits at $13.20m after averaging 5,022 on 385 screens.

#4 Monster Hunter $529,836

There was a drop off in revenue this week after the first three films with Monster Hunter averaging $1,886 on 281 screens.

#5 Promising Young Woman $497,561

The film that features a young woman who takes revenge against the men that have wronged her averaged $2,647 on 188 screens.
