Box Office: Thor: Love and Thunder maintains top spot

This weekend, the Australian box office made $14 million, down -24% on last week’s $18.47 million.

Thor: Love and Thunder has held its #1 position for the third week in a row, as the fourth instalment of the Thor films grossed $3.58 million, down -50% from the week before. 

Making its way to #2 in its debut week is the coming-of-age film, Where The Crawdads Sing. The film is based on the 2018 novel of the same name and grossed over $2.5 million at the box office this past weekend.

Down from second to third is Minions: The Rise of Gru starring, Steve Carell. The animated film continues to be a popular choice for moviegoers – maintaining its position in the top five, five weeks in a row.

Over the weekend, the Illumination Production made $1.64million at the box office, down -25% from last weekend’s $3.8million.

Top Gun: Maverick has fallen from third to fifth this past weekend, grossing over $1.67 million, down -25% from last weekend.

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis was bumped down from fourth to fifth and grossed $1.57 million. Falling out of the top five is Jurassic World: Dominion which has grossed a total of $32.29 million to date.

#1, Thor: Love and Thunder, $3.58 million

Hemsworth leads the star-studded cast as Thor alongside Portman, Waititi, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander and Russell Crowe. The film made an average of $7,372 across 486 screens and has brought in a total of $37.14 million to date.

#2. Where The Crawdads Sing, $2.52 million

Based on the 2018 novel by Delia Owens, Where The Crawdads Sing has made a strong entrance into the box office charts. The film tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. Where The Crawdads Sing averaged $5,202 across 483 screens this weekend.

#3, Minions: The Rise of Gru, $3.08 million

The animated family film is the sequel to the spin-off prequel Minions (2015) and the fifth entry overall in the Despicable Me franchise. The Office’s Steve Carell reprises his role as Gru, with Pierre Coffin voicing the Minions. It has so far made $39.12 million at the Australian box office and averaged $5,005 across 347 screens this past weekend.

#4, Top Gun: Maverick, $1.64 million

Tom Cruise reprises his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell more than 30 years from the original hit film. Cruise stars alongside Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Glen Powell and Jon Hamm. The film averaged $5,008 across 329 screens and has grossed $83.61 million, making it the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time in Australia.

#5, Elvis, $2.13million

Austin Butler stars as Elvis Presley in the biographical musical drama based on the life of the King of Rock and Roll, directed by Luhrmann. In the five weeks since its debut at the Australian box office, the biopic has grossed $27 million to date. This past weekend, the film averaged $4,445 across 355 screens.
