The second weekend of Doctor Strange saw the Marvel project continue to rule at the local box office with just under $4m out of the weekend total of $10.52m. Takings were down 17% week-on-week. Despite a strong lead title, the weekend box office take was the lowest since the week ending 10 February when Dirty Grandpa was #1 with $1.49m on its second weekend.

#1 Doctor Strange $3.70m

After opening on 643 screens last week the Marvel movie distributed by Walt Disney dropped 85 screens to 558. Its weekend take worked out to an average of $6,642 per screen which was down on last weekend's $9,992. The takings were down 42%. After less than two full weeks in distribution the movie has grossed $12.32m.

The movie opened at #1 across the US on this past weekend where Marvel scored its 14th consecutive #1 movie.

#2 Hacksaw Ridge $1.60m

The Mel Gibson-directed war movie didn't get close to #1, but that would have been hard opening on 266 screens. It had an OK screen average of just over $6,000 which was not too far behind Doctor Strange. The movie was filmed in New South Wales and features Aussies galore including a co-writing credit for TV screenwriter Andrew Knight.

#3 The Accountant $1.57m

The reviews have been harsh for the new Ben Affleck movie about an accountant who "uncooks" the books for criminals. Warner Bros opened the movie on 293 screens with a screen average of $5,368.

#4 Girl On The Train $756,000

A fifth consecutive week in the top five sees the movie sitting on $14.37m to-date. Its 296 screens rank it behind only Doctor Strange this week and it had a screen average of $2,556.

#5 The Light Between Oceans $655,000

Sit through the long trailer for this and you'll surely not have many surprises left if you make it to the movie. Reviews we saw were not glowing for this either. The film is an international co-production with filming in New Zealand and Tasmania. Aussies in the cast include Bryan Brown, Jack Thompson and Anthony Hayes. The movie opened on 144 screens with a screen average of $4,554.
