Box Office: Takings hold above $14m without major new release

The gross for the top 20 movies over the weekend was down

With school holidays around much of the country, box office takings held above $14m for a second successive weekend despite the absence of a major new release. The gross for the top 20 movies over the weekend was down 5% week-on-week, but it managed to hold at $14.08m with only one new release in the top five at #5.

#1 Kingsman: The Golden Circle $3.60m

It's a second week on top for Kingsman 2 with a screen average of $8,795 from over 400 screens, which represents a box office drop of 37% on the previous weekend. The movie has grossed $12.08m to-date.

#2 The Emoji Movie $2.18m

One of two movies to boost their take thanks to school holidays. The weekend earn was up 41% and it has taken $9.08m so far after three weekends.

#3 Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie $1.59m

The big hit of the week with a climb of 65% from its opening weekend as the movie added 34 screens to 324 with a screen average of $4,934. Total earn is at $5.77m as of Sunday.

#4 It $1.43m

The horror movie remains the top earner in the top 20 with $21.26m to-date. Takings dropped 41% weekend-on-weekend with a screen average of $4,820 from 297 screens.

#5 Flatliners $1.12m

The sole new entry to crack the top five with a screen average of $4,922 from 228 screens. The sci-fi horror outing is a remake of the 1990 film.
