Box Office: Space Jam is a slam dunk despite lockdown affected weekend

• The Australian box office is down 60% week on week as more cinemas close due to pandemic

Despite the Covid-19 out break spreading across the country 2,627 screens were still operating this week, which was down from 3,175 the week prior. This led to a 60% decrease in revenue after a total of $5.99m in total revenue.

Despite these challenges Space Jam: A New Legacy was able to debuted at #1 in its first week of release out earning Black Widow despite having less screens over the weekend.

In The Heights was the only film to drop out of the top five. The film has made $3.62m over four weeks.

#1 Space Jam: A New Legacy $2.29m

25 years after the original Space Jam, Space Jam: A New Legacy has opened in the #1 spot at the Australian box office. Michael Jordan has been swapped out for Lebron James in a modern adaption of one of the most beloved basketball movies of all time. In its first week of release it averaged $6,193 per screen despite growing fears of the pandemic.

#2 Black Widow $1.99m

Lots has been made of how much money Disney has made through releasing Black Widow through premier access on Disney+, but the film continues to rake in money in theatres as well with almost $2m in its second week of release. The film has been unfortunate to launch during a Covid outbreak but has still managed a total of $10.43m over that time. Black Widow was the most screened film in the country being shown on 409 screens, making an average of $4,868.

#3 Fast & Furious 9 $427,850

After five weeks Vin Disel and co continues to hang around after making over $20m to date. The film was a fair but behind the pack in the race for #1 but easily came in third after averaging $1,945 on 220 screens.

#4 Spirit Untamed $219,672

After six weeks the film is still in the top five after averaging $1,187 on 185 screens. To date the film has made $5.64m.

#5 The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard $208,649

The film has now eclipsed $7m after four weeks of release. The film has scraped into the top five after averaging $1,092 on 192 screens.
