Super Smash Bros. Ultimate holds its spot at #1 on the retail games charts this week, and its strong performance hasn’t been restricted to Australia. The game sold more than 3 million copies in its first 11 days on sale in the United States, where it’s now the fastest-selling Switch game and the fastest-selling Smash Bros. game of all time. In Europe it’s the fastest-selling Nintendo home console game ever, which is no mean feat given the company’s back catalogue. Of course, Ultimate very much capitalises on that legacy. Like the previous titles in the series, it’s a love letter to Nintendo’s heritage in the guise of a frenetic fighting game, and as such is packed to the brim with familiar characters and references to Nintendo past. It’s the best Smash Bros. game yet.

Elsewhere there are no real surprises. Red Dead Redemption II is still in second place, and will likely retain a place on the charts for the foreseeable future, as will Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, sitting next in line. Just Cause 4, which debuted in third place last week has now dropped down to eight. It’s surrounded by games that have been on the charts for at least a few weeks – and in some cases, many months.

Now that the year is coming to a close, Australian and New Zealand gamers can now vote on their favourite games across a number of categories in IGN’s Select Awards.
