FBi Radio announces partnership with the Judith Nielson Institute

FBi Radio is excited to announce a new partnership with the Judith Nielson Institute.

The Institute, founded in 2018 to support quality journalism and storytelling, has provided funding to allow FBi Radio to appoint a paid Executive Producer position for its flagship news and current affairs program, Backchat.

Broadcasting live each Saturday morning, Backchat aims to tap into stories untold by the mainstream media, breaks down complex topics for youth audiences, and gives a platform to members of the community to be heard on the issues that matter to them. Sporting a long history as a training ground for young Australian media professionals, notable Backchat alumni include Osman Faruqi (7am), Avani Dias (triple j), and Maddison Connaughton (The Saturday Paper).

Millie Roberts, Backchat’s new Executive Producer, brings a wealth of experience to the role. An FBi Radio volunteer since 2019, she has occupied a number of roles within the station including editorial assistant, producer, broadcaster and podcaster. Millie currently works as the editorial coordinator and digital producer for delicious. magazine, having previously worked for a plethora of other media platforms including VICE, ABC’s 7:30 program, Netflix, the Guardian, and Sydney Fringe Festival. 

Millie explained the significance of FBi's partnership with the Judith Nielson Institute:

"The funding from Judith Neilson Institute will help drive Backchat into the next phase - reaching new audiences and cementing our place in the young adult’s news landscape. It will support our planning and strategic direction, production quality and mentorship over Sydney’s brightest next gen of journalists and storytellers."

Under Millie’s guidance, the funding from the Judith Nielson Institute will allow the Backchat team to undertake a comprehensive show rebrand, expand their content and reach on social media, build their focus on investigations, work towards a self-sufficient podcast and continue to build connections with geolocative and minority communities.
