Pitch Perfect 2 hits a high note at the box office

Fat Amy squashes the competition as Pitch Perfect 2 launches with 9.41m

The May movie box office monsters keep rolling out with Pitch Perfect 2 landing on 427 screens this past weekend as it earned a screen average of $22,059 for a weekend total gross of $9.41m. The movie featuring Aussie actor and Stan spokesperson Rebel Wilson as Fat Amy accounted for more than half of all tickets sold as the top 20 movies earned $16.14m. That is up 20% on the previous weekend of $13.40m.

The second of just two movies that took over $600,000 was The Avengers: Age Of Ultron with $3.47m on just under 600 screens after 751 the previous weekend. The screen average was still a healthy $5,947. The total earn so far is $34.02m after three weekends.

The second weekend of Unfriended was at #3 with $585,000.

Down one spot to #4 is Fast And Furious 7 with $510,000 as the total climbs to $42.61m.

Rounding out the top five is the first week of the music doco Cobain: Montage Of Heck with $278,000 from 72 screens at just under $4,000 per screen.

Cinderella slipped out of the top five in its seventh week with just under $250,000 with its total now just under $22m.
