News Australia has begun recruiting for its 2025 National Editorial Cadet Program, a paid 12-month pathway set to bring 30 early-career journalists into some of the country’s most recognised newsrooms.

Multi-platform newsroom training

Cadets will rotate through at least four metropolitan and regional titles, including The Australian, Herald Sun, The Daily Telegraph, The Courier-Mail, The Advertiser and news.com.au, while receiving foundational training in digital, audio, social and print reporting.

The program blends hands-on breaking-news shifts with masterclasses on emerging technologies shaping the next wave of Australian journalism. Each participant is paired with an experienced newsroom mentor.

Sam Weir: ‘Investment in quality journalism’

Sam Weir, Editor of the Herald Sun and a former cadet himself, said the initiative underlined News’ commitment to quality journalism. "We're committed to nurturing talented individuals who will help us continue our mission of building a better Australia through powerful storytelling and impactful journalism."
