After one year off, Karl Stefanovic returned to Nine's breakfast show, Today, in 2020 following a tumultuous 2018 that saw his personal life splashed across the tabloids.

Since making his comeback, Stefanovic says he has "fallen completely and utterly in love" with his work on Today.

"Over the years, it's had its moments. But I've fallen completely and utterly in love with it since I've come back, working with you (Ally Langdon) for those three years and Sarah (Abo)," he said, speaking at the launch of Nine News Melbourne in the Victorian capital on Friday.

Stefanovic continued: "It's given me a great sense of responsibility. You've got to be a voice for people in the morning.

"It's a great show for exercising all the various personalities that I have," he joked, "I've got a very short attention span, and there's nothing like three and a half hours of live TV."

Stefanovic admitted that while live TV hours can be "grinding" he was grateful to be surrounded by a team of people on the show who made it easier and enjoyable.

"You come into work, and we have a laugh. We all went out to dinner last night, there's that kind of camaraderie, they're brilliant.

"Everyone's brilliant at broadcasting. The weekend team as well. Everyone's good at live TV, and I love live TV more than anything else," he added.

Stefanovic spoke about his colleagues and Melbourne's newly appointed news team, Alicia Loxley and Tom Steinfort, calling them "incredible journalists and people."

He then spoke broadly about the Today team: "We have a great team of people on this network, and we do hang out. I mean, there are people in the past who we don't hang out with anymore! But you know, that happens.

"But I genuinely love the people here. They're interesting. They're funny, they're smart, and they're just bloody good to be around. So, it's a brilliant network.

Loxley and Steinfort take over the weekday 6 pm bulletin from Peter Hitchener following his recent move to anchor the weekend bulletin.
