David Meagher has been appointed editor of Gourmet Traveller, taking the reins of Are Media’s flagship premium food and travel publication from Monday 15 September.

Meagher, a respected name in luxury publishing, will oversee print and digital editorial teams, reporting to Nicky Briger, General Manager of Luxury at Are Media. He will also drive the title’s strategic evolution across content, video, and events as it approaches its 60th anniversary in 2026.

“David’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Australia’s leading title on travel, dining and luxury lifestyle,” said Briger. “Next year marks Gourmet Traveller’s 60th anniversary, and we’ll be more focused than ever on ambitious growth, new formats and connecting with premium audiences.”

She added: “(David) brings a deep editorial expertise, strong commercial sensibility and passion for storytelling that makes him the ideal leader for Gourmet Traveller.”

Meagher joins from The Local Project, where he served as managing editor, leading multi-platform storytelling across lifestyle and real estate brands. He is best known for his 15-year tenure as editor-in-chief of WISH at The Australian, where he built a reputation for editorial excellence and deep engagement with luxury advertisers.

His career also spans senior roles at The Australian Financial Review and The Sydney Morning Herald, as well as contributions to Belle, Vogue Living and Qantas Magazine. He is also the author of four books.

“It’s a great honour to be joining Gourmet Traveller, a brand I’ve long admired for its world-class storytelling and editorial connection with readers,” Meagher said. “I look forward to working with the team to grow the brand’s omnichannel presence and to continue to inspire our audience through the lens of food, travel, people and luxury.”
