Our annual listing of 25 media executives who made a difference this year and are shaping how 2018 will look.

Paul Whittaker, Editor-in-chief, The Australian

It’s been two years since Paul Whittaker took on the editor-in-chief role at The Australian from Chris Mitchell. 2017 has been a good year for the masthead with most performance indexes pointing upwards. The paper clocked up $25 million digital sales earlier this year and also achieved the target of having 100,000 digital subscribers.

The Australian was recognised at the 2017 PANPAs in the Best Mobile Site category and was named the Newspaper of the Year for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, The Weekend Australia brought home an award for Weekend Newspaper of the Year. In a conversation with Mediaweek, Whittaker said: “It’s a reflection of us doing the things that we need to do every day right.”
