Our annual listing of 25 media executives who made a difference this year and are shaping how 2018 will look.

Ian McClelland, CEO, Guardian Australia

Naysayers thought the title wouldn’t last in Australia but it is wrapping another year with a growing and significant audience.

“Our USP is that we are the only major independently owned media organisation that doesn’t have shareholders, a media mogul or other commercial influence or political influence telling us who to hire, what to write and what not to write,” McClelland told Mediaweek.

“That status is absolutely sacred.” Just this week McClelland revealed he is being poached by the UK next April to become MD corporate development for Guardian Media Group. “It’s been a huge privilege to help launch and grow Guardian Australia, which has become a vital and distinctive news source for millions of Australians,” said McClelland. Currently, the site is the fifth-most accessed news website in Australia, behind news.com.au, ABC News, The SMH and nine.com.au.
