TV Guide: Barry Humphries - A Life of Laughs on Nine

Liz Hayes will take a look back on the life and legacy of Barry Humphries and reflect on the longevity and comic brilliance of Humphries in Barry Humphries - A Life of Laughs, premiering Wednesday, May 3 at 8:30 pm on Channel 9 and 9Now. 

From his ordinary upbringing in Melbourne suburbia to the mid-1950s debut of his famous character, Dame Edna Everage, Hayes remembers the career of the legend that spanned 70 years up until his death last week at the age of 89. 

Delving into Humphries' personal archive and using rare footage and clips that stamped his entire career, Hayes explores the unique wit and staying power of the performer. 

Sharing personal anecdotes and marvellous memories of interviewing Humphries, Hayes recalls the unpredictability he cleverly used in every incarnation. 

Liz Hayes said: "Reporters, like me who interviewed him never knew what we were going to get, but I can assure you that as you will see, Barry never let us down."

Barry Humphries - A Life Of Laughs premieres Wednesday, May 3, at 8:30 pm on Channel 9 & 9Now. 

Humphries passed away in April at the age of 89 after complications from hip surgery. 

A statement released by Humphries' family said that "He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit. 

"With over 70 years on the stage, he was an entertainer to his core, touring up until the last year of his life and planning more shows that will sadly never be. 

"His audiences were precious to him, and he never took them for granted. Although he may be best remembered for his work in theatre, he was a painter, author, poet, and a collector and lover of art in all its forms.

"He was also a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friend and confidant to many. His passing leaves a void in so many lives."
