Melbourne Radio Ratings 2023 Survey 2: 3AW and Gold rule the roost

Nine’s 3AW continues its strong run, topping the Melbourne market with a 16.3% share, keeping it over the 16% mark for the second time this year. In breakfast, Ross and Russel dipped 1.6%, but that drop did nothing to dent their lead with a 21.1% share. It was a similar story in Drive, with Tom Elliott keeping a market leading share of 11.6% despite a slide of 3 points. The station’s biggest lift came from the evening combo of Scott Hayward (Money News) and Denis Walter, up 1.5%.The station continues to dominate in the 55-64 and 65+ demos, with a share of 25.2% and 38.0% respectively.

Coming off of Gold’s best start to the year in recent Melbourne radio ratings memory, the ARN station has recorded a slight drop of 0.8 points for a total share of 11.6%. The Christian O’Connell Show remains strong as Melbourne’s top FM breakfast for a 23rd consecutive radio ratings survey, with a share of 11.1% after a dip of 0.4%. Gold recorded a dip in every day part, and holds strong as the leader in the 40-54 demo with a 17.4% share.

smoothfm 91.5 has jumped from fourth to third in 10+ share this survey, lifting 0.4 points for a 9.7% total. smoothfm breakfast, now just with Mike Perso, lifted 0.4 to 7.8%. The station lifted in every day part except Afternoons, with Drive climbing 0.7 points for a 9.1% share. A boost of 3.8 points in the 18-24 demo has brought smooth to a 13.2% share – making 18-24 the station’s strongest demo.

Last survey, Fox recorded its best share in any survey since mid-2019. Survey two, has come with a slight dip of 0.5%, but remains a very strong 9.3%. Fifi, Fev and Nick have cracked double figures in breakfast, a record for the show and the best result for breakfast since Survey 5 of 2019. In Drive, Carrie and Tommy are creeping up on Gold FM, coming in with a 10.1% share after a dip of 0.5%.

Fox is the leader in the 10-17, 18-24, and 25-39 demos, with respective shares of 15.5%, 14.5%, and 16.7%.

A drop of 0.6 points has seen Nova tie with KIIS on 6.5%. On breakfast, the new Ben, Liam and Belle program recorded a slight dip of 0.2 points, bringing them to 7.1%. The station high is 9.3% in drive where Ricki-Lee, Tim and Joel are sitting on 8.1% after a 1.2 point drop. 

Nova was another station that dipped across every daypart, and lifted most in the 55-64 demo, up 1.3 points.

After the station’s best survey one result in recent memory, KIIS has stayed largely steady with a dip of 0.1, tying with Nova on 6.5%. Breakfast with Jase and Lauren managed to stay flat at 7.2%. On Drive, Will and Woody were up 0.6 points for a total share of 8.2%.

Survey one saw Triple M record the best start to a year for the station 10+ since 2019, and that result of 6.1% has stayed flat in survey two. It was the same story on Breakfast, with Marty Sheargold staying steady at 5.2% – compared to the first two surveys of last year, which were both under 5%. The biggest demographic life came from 40-54, where the station was up 0.5 points for a 9.9% share.

The biggest lifter of the survey, SEN was up 0.6 for a 2.4% share. Breakfast was up 0.1 points, bringing in a 2.4% share, whilst the best performer was Evenings with 3.3%. The station was up in all dayparts except Evenings and has lifted in all demos.

Both the station and Breakfast were up 0.1 on 3MP, with a 10+ share of 1.6% and Breakfast coming in with 0.7%. Afternoons (2.4%) and Mornings (2.0%) are the station high points.

Up 0.3, Magic 1278 has recorded a station share of 1.2%. Breakfast has mostly remained steady on 0.5%, up from 0.4%, while at the other end of the day evening sits on 2.5%. After a rough first survey, the station lifted or remained steady in all dayparts in survey two.

A dip in cume was joined by a dip in share in all dayparts except Breakfast – up 0.4% for a 1.3% share. The station performed best in the 40-54, 55-64, and 65+ demos, all with a 0.9% share.
