The Guardian will announce its new editor-in-chief tonight Australian time. The incoming editor will take over from Alan Rusbridger (pictured) who is stepping down after leading what is now a global news brand for the past two decades.

The two candidates left in the race are current US editor-in-chief and launch editor of The Guardian Australia, Katherine Viner, and former deputy editor Ian Katz who is currently at the BBC as editor of the TV program Newsnight.

Rusbridger is leaving the news organisation to become the chair of its ultimate owner the Scott Trust.
