Following his recent resignation from the ABC, the controversial defence correspondent Andrew Greene will join The West Australian as its new national political editor.

A source familiar with the appointment advised that Greene will take up the role next month following his resignation from the ABC earlier this week.

Greene will be based in Canberra.

End of a long tenure at ABC

Greene’s move comes after a 15-year career with the ABC, which ended this month following a 10-week standoff over allegations he failed to declare a sponsored trip.

Earlier this year, Greene filed a story for The World Today on German shipyards and defence manufacturer ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

The report did not disclose that Greene had travelled to Germany as a guest of the company. He had advised ABC management that he was on annual leave at the time.

Media Watch later revealed the details of the trip, which coincided with ThyssenKrupp Marine competing against Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for a major contract to build Australia’s next fleet of warships.

While other outlets, including The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, also covered the junket, they disclosed the travel arrangements to readers.

After more than two months on leave while the ABC investigated, Greene resigned on Monday.
