Ed Couche has been CEO of offline media business Shopper, following the passing of Ben Walker last month.

He co-founded the company - then called Shopper Media - with his close friend Walker in 2015, which they grow and eventually rebranded in 2021.

Couche steps into the role after serving as the company's chief operations officer.

He brings a wealth of experience in business development and commercial management to the CEO role.

In the year ahead, he has set his sights on growing the retail OOH category through close and collaborative partnerships with agencies, brands and shopping centres and delivering optimal media value for the businesses and brands that Shopper support.

Prior to founding Shopper, Ed spent 14 years working in the out-of-home industry at oOh! Media and JCDecaux in the UK.

David Morgan, Shopper chairman, said: "Ed’s appointment is a natural transition for the business, as he has played an intrinsic role in the company’s vision since its inception. He has been instrumental in leading the technology, operations and commercial areas of the Shopper business in recent years."

Meanwhile Couche said: "Ben and I started Shopper with a shared passion and vision for the retail industry, and that vision has been unwavering as we invested in innovation, technology and, our people – all of whom bring unique experience and skillsets into the business."

He added: "Shopper has delivered exponential growth and I remain committed to Ben’s legacy and ensuring the continued and enduring success of this business, our people and the industry at large."

Shopper’s 100% digital panels are in more than 430 shopping centres around Australia, leading to the resurgence of out-of-home advertising and growth in the sector.

Walker's passing was announced last month. He was aged 47. The company released a statement:

Shopper is saddened to report that CEO and founder Ben Walker passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, 15 January at the age of 47.

“Ben was a larger-than-life character and an exceptional leader – but above all, he was an extraordinary human being,” says Shopper Chairman David Morgan.

“Ben was passionate about the retail media industry, his clients and his Shopper colleagues, who he regarded as his family.

“Ben founded Shopper in 2015 with co-founder and friend Ed Couche. As a charismatic and visionary leader, Ben built the company with a focus on innovation and people, who he always put first, creating a culture of loyalty and commitment, of which he was very proud. He will be sadly missed by all who worked with him.

“Our thoughts are with his wife Lisa, and two boys during this incredibly difficult time. Those close to him knew that Ben viewed his role as a father and family man as his most important job.”
