Peter Tonagh resigns from ABC Board

The chair of the ABC, Kim Williams AM, has announced the resignation of Peter Tonagh from the ABC Board, effective immediately. Tonagh's resignation was formally submitted to the Governor General, Sam Mostyn AC. His departure also marks the conclusion of his tenure as deputy chair, a role he has held since November 2021.

Williams praised Tonagh’s contributions to the national broadcaster, describing his service as a period of "dedicated commitment to the ABC and its good governance." He acknowledged Tonagh’s leadership on the Board and his earlier role in leading the Efficiency Review of the ABC and SBS, commissioned by then-minister for communications Mitch Fifield.

“Peter Tonagh has provided invaluable leadership and made a significant impact on the effective running of the ABC,” Williams said. “We express heartfelt gratitude for his exemplary public service and his unwavering support for the ABC’s mission.”

In a statement, Tonagh expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve on the ABC Board, thanking his fellow directors and the executive team for their camaraderie.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served on the ABC Board,” Tonagh said. “The ABC plays a vital role in Australia’s media landscape, and I have full confidence in its continued success under its exceptional leadership.”

As part of his resignation, Tonagh extended his support for the incoming managing director, Hugh Marks, who will take the reins from 10 March 2025.

“I believe Hugh Marks is well-positioned to build on the strong foundation laid by David Anderson, whose leadership has been instrumental in advancing the ABC’s role in Australian media,” Tonagh said.
