Google has announced it will spend $US165m over the next three years to help European publishers and newspapers adapt to digital with The Digital News Initiative.

The New York Times writes that the announcement comes less than two weeks after the European Commission antitrust charges against the search engine for abusing its dominant position online.

Newspapers from the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands have been identified as the founding partners of the initiative, along with The European Journalism Centre, The Global Editors Network and The International News Media Association.
