Veteran radio presenter Ron Wilson has departed 2SM's Breakfast program just six months after joining the station.

The move ends a short-lived tenure that began with significant on-air promotion and a broader attempt to reposition the Super Radio Network's flagship Sydney station.

Wilson confirmed his departure in a brief Facebook post on Thursday evening, writing: "Thanks for the ride 2SM. It was … interesting … while it lasted."

In an interview with news.com.au, Wilson said he was "limited" on what he could say as he has "a few little loose ends tie up with 2SM yet, so I don’t want to upset anyone in that area".

He went on to reveal the network had included an option in his contract "to give it a try out for six months" adding "that’s exactly what happened".

"It wasn't quite what they were looking for," he said

Mediaweek has reached out to the network regarding Wilson's exit, as a formal statement is yet to be released.

Network refresh

Wilson's appointment was originally announced in January as part of a programming refresh aimed at revitalising 2SM's presence in Sydney's competitive breakfast radio market.

At the time, Super Radio Network co-owner George Caralis described the former Network Ten and Smooth FM host as a strategic hire, stating, "We're hiring top talent instead of letting them go."

Wilson was brought in to front the Breakfast slot, broadcasting weekdays from 5:30am pitting him up against the the likes of 2GB's Ben Fordham.

2SM does not participate in the GfK radio ratings after pulling out in 2003.
