Wednesday Netflix prices

From today, new Netflix customers will see a price increase for Australian Netflix prices across the board. The new price rises are well above the rate of inflation, instead reflecting increased costs for Netflix as it grows and matures the service.

The new prices are:

Standard with ads: AU$9.99 month (up from $7.99)

Standard: AU$20.99 month (up from $18.99)
Standard subscribers can also add one extra member for $6.99 month with ads (up from $5.99) or $8.99 month without ads (up from $7.99)

Premium: AU$28.99 month (up from $25.99)
Standard subscribers can also add two extra members for $6.99 month with ads (up from $5.99) or $8.99 month without ads (up from $7.99)

While your eyes are watering at the new prices and you are lifting your jaw from the ground, know that when Netflix launched in Australia (back in March 2015), it cost just $10.99 at launch for the standard plan, while the premium plan cost $14.99.

Existing customers will receive email notification ahead of price rises.

How does Netflix's prices compare to the competition?

There's no polite way of saying it: Netflix is the most expensive of the mainstream subscription video services in Australia. But, it is worth putting that into the context of which service you watch the most. For quite a number of people, Netflix drives considerable viewing hours every month. It may cost more, but it may also be giving you more value per streamed hour.
