Radio Ratings, GfK Survey 7, 2019

• 2GB and smoothfm again lead market
• Alan Jones and Kyle & Jackie O best in breakfast
• Moonman and The Chaser continue Triple M turnaround

UP: Sports Radio/Triple M/smoothfm +0.1
DOWN: 104.1 2Day FM -0.6

2GB 13.3% (13.4%)

Breakfast, morning and afternoon shares trended down just over 0.5 in each shift, but drive and evening lifted over 1.0. Station share is at its lowest since survey 3, 2018, while breakfast share was lower in survey 1, 2019. Ben Fordham is now outright #1 in drive.

smoothfm 9.3% (9.2%)

The Nova Entertainment brand continues to lead the FM market and this survey marks 12 months of share on or well over 9%. All dayparts lifted this survey with evening growing most, up 1.7 to 11.4%.

KIIS 1065 9.0% (9.1%)

Kyle and Jackie O drive the performance here, with share down 0.4 to 11.2%, well ahead of second-placed sister station WSFM. Will and Woody are now outright #1 FM in drive, moving ahead of Nova after sharing top spot with them on 10.0% last survey.

WSFM 7.6% (8.2%)

The station’s share is at its lowest since survey 2, 2017 when it recorded 7.0%. Jonesy and Amanda remain #1 FM in the market on 8.0%. The damage was done this survey in morning (-1.3) and afternoon (-1.7).

Nova 96.9 7.6% (7.6%)

Breakfast with Fitzy and Wippa was down 0.5 to 7.3%, but the station has the biggest cume audience in Sydney with 1,034,000. Breakfast is on 566,000, trailing on the KIIS breakfast cume. Drive is now #2 behind KIIS while the only daypart to grow share was afternoon, up 0.5 to 8.0%.

104.9 Triple M 6.4% (6.3%)

The station is enjoying its best share since survey 2, 2016. The turnaround can be tracked to Moonman in breakfast where the team (now sadly minus Gus Worland) has a share of 6.9% (+0.6) which is the best breakfast share since 2017. The Chaser should also get some of the credit as they host part of the afternoon shift where share of 8.1% is up 1.1 and now the highest daypart at the station.

104.1 2Day FM 3.9% (4.5%)

The search for a breakfast show to do better than the current share of 2.6% for a music alternative will no doubt continue. Best of the day is afternoon and drive with share over 5%.

2CH 1170 3.5% (3.8%)

The breakfast show has trended down all year and with this survey now the lowest share in four years – 2.1%. The day’s best is 4.5% in afternoon.

Sky Sports Radio 0.8% (1.1%)

As rumours continue about possible breakfast hosts to replace the recently departed Terry Kennedy, breakfast share dipped 0.3 to 1.3%.

Macquarie Sports 954 0.8% (1.1%)

The good news for Tom Malone taking over as Macquarie Media radio boss is that he gets to run the highest-rating stations in Australia. The bad news is he also has to work out what to do with the lowest-rating too.
