Box Office: Doctor Strange continues to dominate in quiet week

This weekend, the Australian box office made $9.10 million, down 32% on last week’s whopping $13.4 million.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness continues to top the box office for the third consecutive week, grossing over $3 million this past weekend.

Downton Abbey: A New Era, The Lost City and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 all remain in the same spot as last week as Operation Mincemeat falls out of the top five.

Making its debut and racing to third place is How to Please a Woman. Starring British actor Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones’ Diary), the Australian comedy is rounded out by a cast of Australian and New Zealand talent including Erik Thomson, Alexander England, Cameron Daddo, Tasma Walton and Hayley McElhinney.

#1, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, $3.87 million

The sequel to Doctor Strange averaged $6,143 across 631 screens this weekend, making a total of $32.75 million. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film stars Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Benedict Wong alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.

#2, Downton Abbey: A New Era, $578,991

In its fourth week of release, the period drama averaged $1,782 across 325 screens. The film has grossed a total of $6.6 million to date.

#3, How to Please a Woman, $501,064

This Australian comedy made $1,704 across 294 screens in its first full week. Directed by Renee Webster (TV’s Aftertaste and The Heights) the film centres on the frustrations that plague a generation of Gen X women who have been made to feel invisible.

#4, The Lost City, $468,901

The Lost City remains steady at fourth as it enters its sixth week on screens. The film averaged $2,004 across 234 screens, totalling $15 million to date.

#5, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, $446,375

Keeping the same position as last week, the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog averaged $1,891 across 236 screens. The film has grossed $21.75 million to date.
