This weekend the Australian box office made $19.55 million, up 106% from last week’s $9.85 million.
Making its debut and becoming the biggest and best-performing blockbuster of the year with 933,000 in attendance from Wednesday to Sunday last week is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film grossed over $13 million more than its closest competitor as 70% of the weekend audience was aged between 14-39. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, the film is the sequel to Doctor Strange (2016) and the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Downton Abbey: A New Era, the sequel to the 2019 film Downton Abbey, has fallen from first to second. Both films were written by Julian Fellowes, the creator and writer of the Downton Abbey TV series.
The Lost City, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore all remain in the top five since their debut week.
Dropping out of the top five this week is The Bad Guys which has grossed over $14 million to date.
#1, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, $14.53 million
The sequel to the popular Doctor Strange averaged 16,834 across 863 screens this weekend. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film stars Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Benedict Wong alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.

#2, Downton Abbey: A New Era, $1.40 million
In its second week, the latest addition to the Downton Abbey franchise averaged $4,210 across 332 screens, pulling in $4.15 million to date.
#3 The Lost City, $846,000
The Lost City has remained steady in the top three since its release four weeks ago. The film has grossed a total of $13.56 million as it averaged $2,811 across 301 screens this weekend.
#4 Sonic the Hedgehog 2, $454,000
In six weeks, the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel has made a total of $20.64 million. This weekend it played across 262 screens, averaging $1,734.
#5 Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, $433,000
The latest Harry Potter instalment has grossed $17.62 million as it averaged $1,775 over 244 screens in its fifth week at the box office.
