After 2.35 million votes, American rapper Doja Cat has taken the number one spot in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2023 with Paint The Town Red. The win sees her become the first woman of colour and first female rapper to take out the #1 spot on the countdown.

As well as the Hottest 100 win, Paint The Town Red boasts millions of streams, 10 weeks at the top of the ARIA charts, and a Grammy nomination.

triple j music director Nick Findlay said: “When we first heard Paint The Town Red back in August, there was little doubt that we’d see it appear at the pointy end of this year’s countdown. Over an iconic sample of Dionne Warwick’s Walk On By, Paint The Town Red shows Doja Cat in her truest form: effortlessly shaking off the haters while flexing her uncanny ability at executing pure pop perfection.”

In the second spot, the highest ranked Australian in the countdown was G Flip with The Worst Person Alive. The Melbourne-born multi-hyphenate artist also smashed the record for the most number of entries in a single countdown, with seven entries off the back of their sophomore album DRUMMER. It also brings their total number of entries across all annual countdowns to 19.

Dom Dolla scored back to back in the top five – #3 with Saving Up and #4 with Rhyme Dust. Rounding out the top five were cassö x RAYE x D-Block Europe with Prada.

Across the rest of the countdown, milestones included:

• Kylie Minogue returning to the countdown for the first time since 1997 with Padam Padam, a new record for the longest time between entries (26 years)
