TV Demand: Ted Lasso kicks its way to the top of the charts

The second season of Ted Lasso has done what it has been threatening to do since the season officially dropped, topping both Digital Original charts.

In the show, American Ted Lasso is a coach of college-level American soccer team. He finds himself recruited to coach an English Premier League team, AFC Richmond, despite having absolutely no experience in that level of the game.

The show is relentlessly positive, making for a joyful distraction from real world headlines - which are decidedly less positive and usually include far less Jason Sudeikis.

Ted Lasso came in at 22.77 points above market average in Australia this week, and 14.32 in New Zealand.

Topping the overall Australian chart was Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The iconic cop comedy has launched its eighth and final season on SBS, and the response has been immediate and positive.

As the show wraps up, it has made headlines for tackling issues such as police brutality and white supremacy head on.

This week it came in at 25.93 points above market average in Australia, and 16.30 points above market average in New Zealand – where it came second on the overall chart.

Marvel’s Loki is still doing well despite losing its top place across the charts, having claimed both Australian charts last week. It comes in at second on Australia’s Digital Originals chart, and third overall.

A second season has been confirmed in the end credits of season one, but we don’t have a release date yet. Some reports say that filming is scheduled for January 2022, which could mean a release date in late 2022 or early 2023, depending on how many effects the show will use. If it’s anything like the first season, it will probably be a lot.

This week in Australia, Loki has come in at 22.54 points above market average, and 12.30 points above market average in New Zealand.
