The Amazing Race Australia is returning to its original format of worldwide travel as international borders open up across the globe with the series premiere coming Monday, August 29 on 10 and 10 Play.

After last year's special twist of the race taking place entirely in Australia due to Covid restrictions, this season will see the contestants race across six continents and experience the extraordinary delights of international destinations such as Turkey, Greece, Belize, Morocco, Mexico and Colombia.

From the picturesque cliffs of Santorini, to the markets of Marrakech, and the tropical water of Caye Caulker, a record 20 teams will be strapping on their backpacks and will be encountering the unexpected at every turn.

Mediaweek spoke to host Beau Ryan ahead of the show’s return and discussed the show’s team being prepared for whatever came their way when it came to Covid concerns.

“We had a backup plan, we had protocols and our own Covid safety team. We adapted because every country has different rules - and in each country, we met the protocols accordingly. Our focus was on making the show and completing all the challenges. I still can’t believe we got it done, but we did!”

When it came to casting The Amazing Race, Ryan said that there were a lot of factors that the team weighed up, but the bottom line was making sure that the entirety of Australia was represented.

“You want to represent each state, that’s important - Australia is so big, and you want every state to be represented fairly. Also, you want to represent all the different cultures and diversity enshrined in Australia. This country looks so different to so many different people, and I think we showed that.”

Ryan also joked that every season there is a team who will get caught out not being able to drive manual cars.

“It’s hard to teach someone to drive a manual, especially on a small road in Santorini!”

The Amazing Race Australia premieres Monday, 29 August at 7.30 pm on 10 and 10 Play.
