Boomtown, the media industry collective representing the 9.9 million people living in regional Australia, has launched Boomtown Insiders: a new advisory council created to nurture emerging industry talent and strengthen ties between agencies and regional audiences.

The initiative calls for 10 up-and-coming agency strategists, planners, or buyers to apply, with the goal of developing lifelong advocates for regional Australia and its media landscape.

Boomtown Insiders will meet regularly to provide input to the collective, share insights and results from their agencies, and help drive the use of tools such as the Boomtown Hub and masterclasses. Members will also take part in a bespoke masterclass, a regional overnight stay, mentoring sessions, and networking events.

Applications are open now, with submissions closing on 7 November. Successful candidates will be announced later this year.

Supporting emerging media leaders

Boomtown Chairman Andrew ‘Billy’ Baxter said the new council would help identify and invest in the next generation of agency leaders.

“We’re looking for young guns of the industry – those who are keen to distinguish themselves through meaningful involvement and want to be empowered to become champions of regional Australia,” Baxter said.

“This is an opportunity for us, as a collective, to identify and invest in the next generation of agency leaders, while also fast-tracking and strengthening the connection between Boomtown and agencies. Boomtown Insiders will be the voice of the 9.9 million Australians living in the regions.”

Simon Grace, Head of Australian Government Partnerships at UM, added that regional markets remain a significant untapped opportunity for brands.

“Understanding regional markets will put you ahead of your peers as you will know the value of regional Australia and ensure that your clients are getting the most value from their advertising dollar,” he said. “Being a Boomtown Insider will give you the edge and be part of a growing community that can truly make a difference.”

Championing regional media’s value

Elizabeth Baker, Chief Investment Officer at Zenith Media, said the program offers a unique, hands-on opportunity for young professionals. “It’s an invaluable experience for anyone looking to build a meaningful and future-focused career in media and advertising,” she said.

Clinton Kay, General Manager of Sweeney Advertising, said local connection remains at the heart of effective communication. “Regional media remains one of the most powerful and authentic environments for brands to communicate,” he said. “Regional Australia isn’t just part of the media landscape — it’s the heart of it.”

Candidates must have between three and six years’ media agency experience and a strong passion for regional Australia. The selection panel includes Baxter, Peter Chapman (CMO, Reflections Holidays), and Katie Finney (Acting Head of Sales, Seven Network).
