Box office: Meryl Streep's Ricki and The Flash debuts at #3, Joel Edgerton's The Gift opens with $780k

holding_the_man_xlgThe total ticket sales for the weekend of the top 20 movies has drifted below $10m for just the third time in 2015. The weekend take of $9.28m was the second lowest result of the year after a mid-March weekend saw the total drop to $8.39m. Back then three movies made it over $1m, this weekend just two made it over $1m.

Southpaw moved from #2 to #1 on its second weekend with $1.30m with a modest drop of 16% from its debut weekend. Southpaw also had the weekend's best screen average of the major releases with $6,645.
Vacation saw its takings dip 34% with a second weekend earn of $1.09m.

The Jonathan Demme-directed Ricki and The Flash starring Meryl Streep, her daughter Mamie Gummer and Rick Springfield had the biggest opening on 259 screens. With $939,000, the film ranked at #3.

Filling out the top five was week four of Trainwreck with $792,000 ($12.5m to-date) and the opening weekend of director/actor Joel Edgerton's The Gift with ($777,000). Starring Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall, the film has a critic rating of 100% from the top critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The faith-based indie War Room opened on just 32 screens but its outstanding screen average of $8,155 pushed it into the top 10 with a weekend gross of $260,000.

Other movies opening on under 40 screens were Neil Armfield's Holding The Man with Ryan Corr and Guy Pearce with $241,000 and the Japanese animation Attack On Titan: Part 1 with $234,000.

Zac Efron's We Are Your Friends disappointed here and in the US. Opening here on 161 screens, the screen average was just under $1,500 for a weekend total of $229,000.
