On Thursday, the Albanese Government released the terms of reference and announced the Steering Committee for the Feasibility Study into the possible relocation of the Sydney-based headquarters and studios of SBS. Currently based in the Lower North Shore suburb of Artarmon, the proposed move would see the SBS headquarters moved to Western Sydney.

Leading the feasibility study is The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, in close consultation with SBS. Overseeing the feasibility study is a Steering Committee, to be chaired by Mike Mrdak AO, former Secretary of the then-federal Communications and the Arts, and Infrastructure Departments.

The Steering Committee will also comprise former SBS Board member Daryl Karp AM, Director and CEO of the Australian National Maritime Museum, Mark Ramsey, Chief Executive Officer of Vecor Technologies, SBS Managing Director James Taylor, and Pauline Sullivan from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

A preliminary finding on whether or not relocation is feasible is expected later this year.

Speaking about the announcement, Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland MP said "The Terms of Reference and Steering Committee announced today will provide strong governance, expertise and leadership to explore whether a possible move of SBS to Western Sydney stacks up.

“While a number of parties have already indicated they are interested in lodging an expression of interest for hosting SBS in Western Sydney, it’s important that all relevant factors are identified and considered.”

In a note to SBS employees about the announcement, SBS Managing Director James Taylor said that “We will be approaching this project constructively, maintain an open mind and will of course keep you updated. SBS is nothing without our people, and there will be consultation with you as this project progresses.”

In July 2022, The ABC announced the signing of a Heads of Agreement for the Lease for a new workplace at Parramatta in Western Sydney. ABC Parramatta – located at 6-8 Parramatta Square – was selected following an extensive procurement process.

The relocation to Western Sydney is a key part of the commitment outlined in the ABC’s Five-Year Plan to see 75% of content makers working outside its Ultimo head office by 2025.
