HBO and Max's The Last of Us is officially returning for a third season, with the renewal announced ahead of the hotly anticipated launch of season two.

The Emmy®-winning drama, based on the best-selling PlayStation game, returns Monday 14 April on Max with a seven-episode run, dropping new episodes weekly.

Set five years after the events of season one, season two plunges Joel and Ellie into deeper emotional and physical conflict, navigating a world more brutal than ever.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their lead roles, joined by returning cast members Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley. The new season also introduces Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino and Catherine O'Hara in guest roles.

A growing footprint

For HBO, Max and advertisers alike, The Last of Us represents rare IP that delivers both ratings and critical acclaim.

"We're thrilled to carry the power of Craig and Neil's storytelling into what we know will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season," said Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming. Co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann praised the "unparalleled cast and crew" and hailed the series' impact, thanking fans for their 'enthusiastic and overwhelming support."
