The Ads that made us Sep 15

Whether it’s a childhood jingle that you can still sing word for word, or a campaign that influences the way you work today, everyone has an ad that has really stuck with them.

Mediaweek has been asking the industry to take a trip down memory lane, to find out all about the ads that made us.

Jade Paolone – Sales Coordinator, ARN

Yellow Pages – Goggomobil

"Not everyone might know what a Goggomobil IS, but you know how to spell it! (gee, ooh, gee, gee, ooh). Being an 80s kid, this was one of the most iconic ads of my childhood."

Ashlie McIntosh – Group Business Director, Hatched Media

Bananas Australia – Make those bodies sing

"I had just started primary school when this was released and it soon became the jingle at every gym class. We would sing with our teacher and alongside interschool sports. Bananas were in constant supply.

"A fond memory and one of my very first as I leapt into schooling, it helped me make my very first friends, eat fruit (something I should do more of now) and learn – all without even realising it at the time.

"It takes me right back every time I hear it."

Brian Merrifield – Executive Creative Director, Common Ventures

Choose One – TV One

"Since 2004-ish I’ve always been blown away by this ad's simple message about individuality whilst being broadly representative of so many cultures and subcultures. This was decades before ‘diversity’ appeared as a ‘mandatory’ on a modern-day brief. I’d like to see the Australian version of this today – somehow I think the 6sec TikTok/Reels cutdown wouldn’t quite work.

"Thanks to its creator Len Cheeseman – the stubborn maestro who always seemed to be ahead of the curve culturally and creatively."
