Just months after season one of The 1% Club wrapped, season two is already on the way.

Seven's new entertainment show is returning at 7pm on Sunday, October 22 on Channel 7 and 7plus.

The game show is hosted by comedian Jim Jefferies and sees 100 everyday Aussies of all ages and backgrounds play for their chance at $100,000 and the opportunity to join the elite ranks of the 1%.

The 1% Club differs from other game shows in the sense that contestants don't necessarily need general knowledge to succeed, as the game is all about logic and common sense. It includes wordplays, puzzles, everyday facts, and pop culture questions.

The group of 100 contestants are first asked a question that 90% of the general population would get correct. Contestants with incorrect answers are whittled down until the final question is asked – which only 1% of Australians would answer correctly. Those who get it right join the elite ranks of the 1% can win up to $100,000 prize money.

The 1% Club is produced by BBC Studios Australia and New Zealand from a format created by Magnum Media and distributed by BBC Studios.

Ahead of season one, Mediaweek spoke to the executive producer from BBC StudiosJohn Leahy, about crunching the numbers and joining the club.

The original version of the format is from the UK, and Australia is the second English language market to pick the show up. Leahy says that there are some differences between the Australian and English versions of The 1% Club.

“The British show is a tremendous classic British primetime show with comedy – but it’s a primetime game show. While it’s a great laugh, we decided we wanted to have a really fun entertainment show that had a game show through the middle of it as its spine, as opposed to purely just a game show.

“It’s shiny floor, it’s fun, but it’s not just ‘what’s the capital of Iceland?’ – it’s not about stuff you’ve learned by rote, it’s about how you look at things.”
